The hardest part of buying a used car in India is not the car. It is working out who you are actually talking to.
An ad says "owner sale". The number belongs to an agent. The price has a cut baked in, and nobody has checked whose name is on the RC. This guide is about buying around all of that.
How to spot a broker ad
That last one is the giveaway. An owner has one car to sell. Anyone with a catalogue is a dealer, whatever the ad says.
What "verified owner" means on NoCom
- Identity. The seller completes a one-time Aadhaar check through DigiLocker, which returns their legal name.
- Ownership. We pull the registered owner from the RC and match it against that verified name.
- Publication. Only if those match does the listing go live. A mismatch is held for manual review, never auto-approved.
Checks to do before you pay
Give yourself an hour and do these in order.
Take it to a mechanic you chose, not one the seller suggests. An hour on a ramp is the cheapest money you will spend on the car.
The test drive
Drive it cold. A car that has been warmed up before you arrive is hiding its start-up behaviour.
Listen with the radio off. Brake hard once in a safe place. Check that it tracks straight with your hands loose on the wheel. Try every electrical switch — windows, locks, aircon, lights — because those are what get skipped.
Paperwork that actually protects you
Form 29 and Form 30 transfer ownership. Both need the registered owner's signature, and you file them with the RTO.
Also get the insurance transferred into your name, and keep a dated receipt signed by both of you stating the price and that the car is sold as seen.
Questions.
How do I know the seller actually owns the car?
On NoCom every seller passes an Aadhaar identity check, and the name on that Aadhaar must match the registered owner on the RC before the listing can go live. A broker cannot pass that check, because the car is not registered to him.
What does the ₹49 pass get me?
Unlimited verified owner contacts for 24 hours, across every listing — not one car. There is no commission on the deal itself, whatever you end up paying for the car.
Can I see the car before paying anything?
Yes. Browsing listings, photos, specs and prices is free and needs no account. The pass only unlocks the owner's phone number so you can arrange a viewing.
What should I never do when buying a used car?
Never pay a deposit before seeing the car, never accept a photocopy of the RC, and never complete the sale without Form 29 and Form 30 signed by the registered owner. If the person selling is not the person on the RC, walk away.
